Demand for separate ‘Garoland’ state
Tura: Ahead of the assembly elections in Meghalaya, the demand for a separate ‘Garoland’ state is gaining momentum in the state.
Assembly elections in Meghalaya are expected to be held in the first half of 2023 along with two other northeastern states of Tripura and Nagaland.
A gathering of the Garo people living in the western part of Meghalaya has been convened in Tura on October 29.
The party has been convened by the Garoland States Movement Committee (GSMC) in association with the National Federation for New States (NFNS).
Both the organizations have appealed to the people living in West Meghalaya to gather in Tura on October 29 to take forward the statehood movement.
Tura is the second largest city in Meghalaya and the largest city in the Garo Hills region of the state.
The Garo Hills region in Meghalaya is spread over an area of 10,102 sq km.
According to the 2011 census, about 1.4 million people live in the Garo hill region of Meghalaya.
