Hailakandi (Assam): The governments of Assam and Mizoram are committed to finding a peaceful solution to the border issues between the two northeastern neighbours, officials of the two states said here on Tuesday.
Deputy Commissioners of Assam’s Hailakandi and Mizoram’s Kolasib districts, Nisarg Hivare and John LT Sanga respectively, were present on the concluding day of the Assam-Mizoram Border Fair.
Officials hoped that the two-day festival would strengthen the spirit of unity and brotherhood between the people of the two states.
He said that the steps taken by the Chief Ministers of Assam and Mizoram were commendable and an amicable solution to the border issues would be reached soon as settlement talks were on.
Various cultural programs were organized in the fair while display and sale of local products were also organized on the occasion.
A friendly exhibition football match was also held between the players of Hailakandi and Kolasib in which the Mizoram team emerged victorious by a margin of two goals to one.
Mizoram and Assam share a 164.6 km long border. Clashes and skirmishes were reported between the border residents of the two states on several occasions.
In July 2021, six people were killed in a violent encounter between the police forces of Assam and Mizoram, after which the two states formed committees to resolve the border dispute.
The border dispute between the two states is a long-standing issue, stemming from two colonial demarcations in 1875 and 1933.
After the separation of Mizoram from Assam as a Union Territory in 1972, there is no proper land demarcation between the two neighboring states.
