Guwahati: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has alerted five of the seven northeastern states about the impending impact of Cyclone Mocha.
According to the IMD, the cyclone is expected to make landfall in the Myanmar-Bangladesh border region on May 14, bringing heavy rain and strong winds.
Meanwhile, an “Orange Alert” has been issued for the day for Mizoram, Manipur and Tripura, which are located near Myanmar and Bangladesh. The department has urged the disaster management agencies to be alert and prepared for any potential calamity.
The IMD’s Regional Meteorological Center has issued a heavy rain warning for Tripura and Mizoram on May 13, forecasting rain at most places and isolated areas of the two northeastern states.
Also, on May 14, heavy to very heavy rain is forecast over Tripura and Mizoram as well as isolated places over Nagaland, Manipur, and South Assam.
The Meteorological Department has also issued a “wind warning” for Tripura, Mizoram and South Manipur, saying gusty winds of 45-55 kmph, gustiness of 65 kmph. , is likely to prevail on May 14.
According to the Meteorological Department, Cyclone Mocha is expected to weaken slightly from the evening of May 13 before crossing the southeastern coasts of Bangladesh and Myanmar between Cox’s Bazar and Kyaukpyu around noon on May 14.
Maximum sustained wind speed is estimated at 110-120 kmph, gusting to 130 kmph.
