Agartala: Even as Charilam, an area of Sepahijhala district, returned to normal after yesterday’s political violence in which a CPIM member died, political parties continued to blame each other for the violent failure. No time was wasted.
According to police reports, more than 30 people from both parties were injured, while Sahid Mia (75), a lifelong activist of the CPIM, succumbed to his injuries.
Speaking to East Mojo, CPIM West Tripura District Secretary Ratan Das said that Mia’s remains were to be handed over to family members and party workers so that they could pay their last respects. But the police seized the body by force, beating up family members and party workers who rushed to GB Pant Hospital to collect the body.
“They are playing every heinous trick to hide their crime. The police have abducted Shahid Mia’s body. We condemn this inhuman behavior of the police,” Das said.
A delegation of left-wing lawyers led by Kar also met the IG Law and Order regarding the matter. CPIM state secretary Jitendra Chowdhury also termed the incident as a “bare act” of political revenge.
While the CPIM attacked the BJP and called for statewide protest rallies condemning the incident, the Congress party also supported the CPIM and said the attacks were against political freedom which is a political right. The organization should be obtained in a democratic country. However, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party has claimed that BJP workers were the target of violent attacks and retaliated.
Tripura Information and Cultural Affairs Minister Sushanta Chowdhury alleged that CPIM workers suddenly attacked peaceful Bharatiya Janata Party workers. “Our people were gathering in the block areas when the CPIM workers suddenly attacked us. Anticipating a major defeat in the next elections, the CPIM’s propensity for indulging in heinous crimes quickly showed. They don’t believe in the democratic setup which they have proved time and again,” Chowdhury said after visiting injured party workers at GBP Hospital Agartala.
The minister also claimed that the incident would serve as an eye-opener for the peace-loving people of the state. He also condoled the death of a CPIM worker and said that any death is unacceptable.
Deputy Chief Minister Jishnu Dev Varma, who has been elected to the state assembly from violence-hit Charilam, accused the opposition party of trying to disrupt the peace in his constituency. “Bashalgarh area goons gathered in Charilam to disturb the peace of the area. Clashes are inevitable in such cases as our workers will try to keep the peace of the area by stopping the anti-social elements. Dev Varma told the injured CPIM MLA held Bhanu Lal Saha responsible for the violence.
Leader of Opposition Manik Sarkar said, “The CPIM party has already obtained permission from the police to organize a large-scale deputation in the block office. There was also going to be a street corner. In the morning our party leaders were informed that BJP also has a political program which will also be held in Charilam rural development block. When our leaders discussed the matter with the police, the policemen assured us that we can go ahead with our party function but the time will be adjusted a little.
But, he said, even after the stipulated time, the BJP workers were not coming out of the block office. “Our party workers could understand that even if they approached the block office, it would lead to untoward consequences, which is why they canceled the block office deputation and a small street in front of the Charilam party office. Tried to sit in the corner. That meeting came under attack,” Sarkar said.
