Aizawl: Congress party workers waved black flags during Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s visit to Mizoram capital Aizawl to inaugurate development projects on Saturday.
The opposition party was protesting against the disqualification of its national leader Rahul Gandhi from Parliament after he was recently convicted in a defamation case.
State Congress leaders and officials of various frontal organizations held a peaceful demonstration in solidarity with Gandhi.
Protesters carried placards and waved black flags as the Union Home Minister entered the Lammual or Assam Rifles Ground to address a public meeting.
They also raised slogans demanding justice for Gandhi.
The protesters alleged that the BJP was targeting Gandhi to defend business tycoon Adani.
He also accused the BJP of stifling freedom of expression and said the party ruling the federal government was “afraid of exposing its wrongdoings” and was therefore trying to divert public attention.
Shah was on a one-day visit to Mizoram on Saturday, during which he inaugurated and laid foundation stones of various development projects worth Rs. 2,414 crore, which also includes a new headquarters complex for the Assam Rifles and the Laldenga Cultural Centre.
