Guwahati: The Congress on Tuesday wrote a letter to the Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly seeking disqualification of its suspended MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed from the House on charges of anti-party activities.

A delegation of party MLAs led by Opposition Leader Debabrata Saikia presented a letter to Speaker Biswajit Daimary to disqualify Ahmed.
Saikia said the solicitation was made on the directions of the leader of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, and as per a goal passed at a gathering of the Assam Congress Legislative Party (ACLP).
Ahmed was suspended from the party in October for over and again disregarding party discipline.

He was also arrested in September 2021 before being suspended for allegedly making provocative remarks against the state’s eviction campaign in Darang district.

Saikia also said that the Congress has already requested the Assembly Speaker to disqualify two other MLAs of the party, Sashi Kanta Das and Siddique Ahmed, who have also been suspended.
