Hailakandi (Assam): The Congress will start a ‘Hate Hath Dhoro’ (hold each other’s hand) padyatra in Assam’s Barak valley on January 28, state unit president Bhupen Bora said here on Saturday.
Leader of the Opposition Debbarta Saikia said Congress leaders from Mizoram, which borders the southern Assam region, would also participate in the padayatra to improve relations between the two states.
The program will start from Dholai in Cachar district near the Assam-Mizoram inter-state border and will end at Malegarh in Karimganj along the India-Bangladesh border on February 10.
The 165-km padayatra will cover all 15 assembly constituencies in three districts of the region.
Bora said that Congress leaders and workers will walk 11 km daily.
He said that during the 45-day Assam program of Bharat Jodo Yatra, Barak valley from Golakganj to Sadiya cannot be covered.
Saikia said there are many problems along the Assam-Mizoram border and Congress leaders from the neighboring state will participate in a program to improve relations between the two states.
Last year, a gun battle broke out between the police forces of Assam and Mizoram over a border dispute along the Barak Valley, resulting in the death of at least six policemen and an Assamese national.
