Congress MLA Ronnie V Lyngdoh resigned as leader of opposition
Shillong: Ronnie V Lyngdoh, a prominent Congress leader, has officially resigned from his position as the Leader of Opposition (LO) in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.
The resignation, effective from Monday, was confirmed through a notification issued by the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Secretariat.
The notification stated that Lyngdoh’s resignation has been formally accepted by the Speaker, marking the end of his tenure as the opposition leader in the Meghalaya assembly.
Lyngdoh’s departure comes at a critical time, and his resignation has sparked speculation about potential changes within the Congress party’s leadership in Meghalaya.
Ronnie Lyngdoh is the lone Congress legislator in Meghalaya Assembly following the merger of 3 of its MLAs with National People’s Party (NPP) earlier this month. Congress had won 5 seats in 2023 State Assembly elections but its number reduced to 4 when Saleng A. Sangma won the Tura MP elections earlier this year. The number came down to just one with 3 of its legislators joining the ruling NPP.
With the strength of just 1 MLA in the Assembly, Congress has been reduced to the smallest party in the current Assembly, and the Trinamool Cognress has become the biggest party in opposition with 5 seats followed by VPP with 4 seats.
