Congress criticize CM Sarma over Manipur horror; NEDA has failed
Guwahati: The Assam Congress has slammed Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who is also the convenor of the BJP-led North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA), over the May 4 incident, where two Kuki women were paraded naked by a mob of Meitei men in Manipur.
Although the incident took place on May 4, just a day after communal clashes between the Kuki and Meitei communities in Manipur, a video of the two women parading naked on the streets surfaced on social media on July 19.
Meanwhile, criticizing Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Congress has said that NEDA, of which he is the convener, has failed to function in all aspects.
Briefing media persons in Guwahati, Assam Mahila Congress President Mira Borthakur said that the incident of parading two Kuki women in Manipur is shameful for a civilized society.
“This incident took place 74 days ago and the Manipur government is trying to cover it up instead of working to bring justice to the victims,” โโsaid Assam Mahila Congress president Mira Borthakur.
She added: “The BJP government in Manipur has lost every right to be in power. It should be removed and President’s rule should be imposed.”
The Assam Congress leader also questioned Assam Chief Minister and NEDA convener Himanta Biswa Sarma for their silence on the matter.
“He usually has answers for everything. But he has no answer for this horrific incident. Why can’t he answer why the Manipur violence has not been brought under control yet,” he said.
“NEDA is useless. It has failed in every sense,” she claimed.
