Speaking to the media on June 5, COCOMI Spokesperson, Khuraijam Athouba, said it is the primary duty of the state and central government to maintain National Highway 2.
“Thus, the committee could not accept the decision to open the said highway which has been blocked for about 30 days. The concerned authority should take all necessary precautionary measures to remove the ban on National Highway 2 permanently,” he said.
The spokesman added that the Union Home Minister had stressed for peace, withdrawal of arms and warned of strict action against Kuki militants violating the ground rule of suspension of operations in his recent visit. But unfortunately, till date normality has not been restored in dusty areas.
“In the memorandum, they call for immediate action against Kuki militants and terrorist groups for continued aggression and provocative attacks towards Meeti village since June 1, 2023,” Athouba said.
“This is done entirely under the Government of India’s “Peace Mission” to resolve the Kuki political issue. If there are attacks by armed Meiteis in Kuki village during the suspension, the committee will be forced to reconsider the matter,” the statement said.
