COCOMI: Reinstate demand of AFSPA in the valley totally absurd

Imphal: The Coordinating Committee on Integrity of Manipur (COCOMI), an umbrella organization of various civic bodies formed in the Imphal Valley, on September 14 termed the demand for re-imposition of AFSPA in the valley areas as “absolutely absurd” and “illogical”.
In a statement by its media coordinator Somendro Thokchom, COCOMI said, “Ransom, extortion and killings are taking place in Kuki-majority areas… There is reasonable peace in all areas from which AFSPA was removed long ago.” COCOMI said that since the outbreak of the current crisis in the Kuki-dominated hill areas, there has been an increase in cases of extortion, highway robbery and kidnapping.
The development follows the killing of three people by unidentified gunmen near Kharam Vaiphei on September 12 of the Churachandpur-based Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum (ITLF) and the Kangpokpi-based Committee on Tribal Unity (COTU). It has come up after demanding implementation of AFSPA in Imphal valley.
In April 2022, the central government had removed the tag of disturbed areas under AFSPA from 15 police station areas of Imphal Valley. In March this year, Chief Minister N Biren Singh announced the withdrawal of AFSPA from four more PS areas.
