Imphal: In yet another sign of failure of law and order in the state, gunmen in four Gypsy vehicles vandalized the residence of COCOMI Coordinator Thokchom Somorendra at Nambol Thiyam in Bishnupur district around 7 PM yesterday.
The attackers, armed with sophisticated weapons, targeted Somorendra’s property and threatened his wife, Irengbam Premabati Devi, by pointing guns at her head. Fortunately, Somorendra was not home at the time. His daughter was so terrified by the ordeal that she nearly fainted.
The women of Thiyam Awang Leikai and Maning Leikai, along with surrounding communities, condemned the attack and staged a sit-in protest today at Nambol Thiyam Community Hall. Speaking to reporters, Somorendra’s elder sister-in-law recounted the harrowing experience.
She intervened to protect Premabati and cared for the frightened daughter. The assailants then proceeded to destroy household items and smash two cars parked in the compound.
A meira paibi leader participating in the protest demanded that the gunmen explain their reasons for attacking the COCOMI Coordinator’s family.
The community remains on edge as they seek answers and justice for the traumatic event.
