Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said on Friday that the government has envisaged a program to empower women through various economic activities.

Addressing a seminar on “Representation of Women of Northeast India in Multi-Disciplinary Discourse” at Don Bosco College, Tura, the Chief Minister said that the government is ensuring that self-help groups (SHGs) ) to make women financially independent.
He told the gathering of a situation where young women are at high risk of giving birth without a three-year gap and some young women give birth to more than five children by the age of 23.

Sangma added that Meghalaya is one of the few states in the country where 95 percent of rural women are part of the self-help group movement and the state has over 4 lakh women under the SHG movement, up from about 35,000 before 2018. thousand.
He said that there are various problems faced by women but the government is working with one approach to provide effective solutions to these problems. However, the government is working with positive thinking to provide various opportunities for economic empowerment of women.

Education Minister Rakkam A. Sangma, who was also present at the national seminar, elaborated on the contribution of women in various fields. He also urged women to overcome challenges and be strong in playing their role in the society.

The education minister further said that women have better persuasive power and their active participation in various fields is very important for the development of the state.
