Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said on Friday that a uniform civil code was against the idea of India. The National People’s Party chief said, “India is a diverse country and diversity is our strength. The idea of the party as a uniform civil code is against the idea of India itself.”
Sangma said that the Northeast has got a unique culture and society and would like it to stay that way. Taking the example of his state, Sangma said, “For example we are a matriarchal society, and that has been our strength and that has been our culture. Now that cannot be changed for us.”
The NPP chief, however, said it would be difficult to go into details without seeing the actual content of the draft UCC. “Of course, we don’t know what kind of bill it will be if it comes out, so without seeing the actual content of the draft, it’s hard to go into the details if it comes out,” he added. will go”.

The Law Commission had issued this notice seeking the views of stakeholders on the issue of Uniform Civil Code.
So far, the two major opposition parties – Aam Aadmi Party and Shiv Sena (UBT) have supported the Centre’s push for a Uniform Civil Code, while several other parties have opposed it.
The BJP supported Sangma’s National People’s Party to form the government in Meghalaya. Sangma’s party contested the election alone after falling out with ally BJP over corruption allegations.
Meanwhile, top sources told that the Union government may introduce a bill to implement the Uniform Civil Code in the monsoon session of Parliament starting next month.
