Nagaon/Digboi (Assam): Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday laid the foundation stone of a tourism center named after the Tiwa king Jongal Balahu at a cost of Rs 50 crore in Nagaon district.

Addressing a public meeting in Raha, Sarma lauded the efforts of the Tiwa community for contributing immensely to enriching Assam’s cultural mosaic.

After the foundation stone laying ceremony of the center at Jungle Balahu Rampart, he said the facility will help highlight the role of the community in building an inclusive society.
Earlier, the Chief Minister visited the historic Jongal Balahu Garh in Raha and paid homage to the great Tiwa king Jongal Balahu.

“The brave warrior, who fought bravely to protect his land and people, will always be an inspiration to the people of Assam,” Sarma said.

In recognition of the great warrior and the contribution of the Tiwa community, the archaeological site at Raha will be transformed into the Jungle Balahu Kshetra.

“The Rs 50 crore project funded by NABARD will include cycle and EV tracks, hanging bridge, amphitheater and museum etc,” he added.

The CM also sought the public’s support in developing a two-lane approach road to the tourist spot of Jungle Balahu.
Later in the day, he attended a tourism fair at Digboi in Tinsukia district and announced Rs 3 crore for infrastructure development of the Nazirating Tumuli tourism circuit.
“Just like the Tawang Festival in Arunachal Pradesh and the Cherry Blossom Festival in Meghalaya, the Assam government has planned to transform the Nazirting Tumuli Tourism Festival into one of the most sought-after tourism events in the state,” he added.
