Shillong: Umiam Dam near Shillong in Meghalaya is on the verge of closure. This was said by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Tuesday.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has said that this situation has arisen due to insufficient rainfall.
“Umiam dam is at the point of closure. We have not received the desired level of rainfall for the past few months,” said Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma.
He added: “If the situation continues, the state may be headed for more difficult times.”
However, the Meghalaya Chief Minister said that the power situation the state is facing is similar to many parts of the country.
“We have to understand that it’s a difficult situation, and we’re doing our best to keep it stable for now and hopefully,” Conrad Sangma said.
The Meghalaya chief minister added: “We will be able to reduce things as we go forward.”
It should be noted that Meghalaya is suffering from severe power shortage.
Common people in Meghalaya are facing the fury of power shortage in the state with homes without power for hours at a time in a day.
Notably, the Meghalaya High Court recently slammed the state government and the electricity regulatory body – Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) for rampant power cuts.
