Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday said that a peace accord with the pro-negotiation ULFA is likely to be signed by the end of May.
“We have sent the draft agreement to pro-negotiator ULFA which is already in discussion with the government. I hope an agreement can be signed next month,” Sarma told reporters in New Delhi.
“However, if the ULFA faction does not agree to the draft agreement, it may be delayed,” he added.
Chief Minister Sarma further said that there has been no progress in talks with ULFA (I) led by Paresh Baruah.
Alpha leader Anup Chetia, who is pro-talks, said he had received a draft agreement from the government.
“We welcome this initiative of the government. But we first gave our representation regarding the peace agreement. Now we will discuss the draft in our body meeting and then take a decision on signing the peace agreement. can be done
Chetia said the accord could be signed if the Center concedes to demands like land rights for the indigenous Assamese people.
He said that he had already dropped the demand for autonomy and insisted on political security of the Assamese people within the ambit of the Constitution.
