Guwahati: After days of controversy over the Assam government’s claims about the existence of the Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga in the state, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday asserted that the legendary site is located in Assam’s ancient Kamrup.
During a visit to the Bhimashankar Dham Jyotirlinga temple at Pamohi in Guwahati, Sarma said that Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga arrived in Kamrup Pradesh according to the Shiva Purana.
The Puranas describe the Dakini Hills, Kamrup and the king of Kamrup. It is clearly written in Shiva Purana that Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga’ is in Kamrup.
“This is our belief…Maharashtra may have its own beliefs. Other places in India also have their beliefs about Lord Shiva,” he told reporters here.
Recently, leaders from Maharashtra crossed political lines and created a controversy by objecting to an advertisement with claims by the Assam government.
Traditionally, the Shiva temple at Bhimashankar near Pune is considered to be the sixth of the 12 Jyotirlingas’ in the country.
According to Hindu mythology, the places where Lord Shiva appeared are known as ‘Jyotirlingas’.
“There is no need for controversy. Lord Shiva is everywhere in India and this shows the strength of Indian Sanatani’ culture. This Bhimashankar temple has been here for thousands of years.” Sarma said.
The CM also said that according to him, Shiv Sena’s Uddhav Thackeray faction lost its mark in the wake of the Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga’ incident.
I think that is why Shiv Sena’s mark has disappeared. Does anyone play politics with God? I can’t say it scientifically, but as per my belief, I can say that the very next day they faced a problem,” said Sarma.
The Election Commission on Friday recognized the faction led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde as the genuine Shiv Sena, and ordered it to be allotted the ‘bow and arrow’ election symbol, dealing a major blow to Uddhav, whose father Bal Thackeray founded the organization in 1966.
