Imphal: In the wake of the escalating violence in Manipur, Chief Minister N Biren Singh has issued a stern threat that if the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) is reinstated, those who perpetuate such acts will be held accountable.
The chief minister expressed his deep concern over recent incidents of violence, particularly the firing in Lilong Chingjao area of Thoubal district, in which four villagers were killed by freedom fighters of the Revolutionary People’s Front (RPF), the political wing of the outlawed People’s Liberation Army(PLA). The attack was allegedly linked to disputes over proceeds from the illegal drug trade.
The CM visited the injured in Raj Medicity and in a video message condemned the violence and appealed to the people of Lilong to maintain peace.
He asserted that the government cannot tolerate lawlessness indefinitely and those who continue to take the law into their own hands will be held responsible for any tough measures taken by the government, including AFSPA. Re-enforcement.
The act was extended for six months in the hilly areas of the state from October last year, with some areas exempted despite violent conflicts.
Singh’s statements come after a series of violent events, including a gunfight in Moreh town near the India-Myanmar border, which left several security personnel injured. The CM has made it clear that the government is committed to ensuring justice and has launched operations to apprehend the culprits involved in the violence.
He also appealed to the public to assist the authorities by reporting suspicious activities and to stand united against the “enemies of Manipur” instead of engaging in internal conflicts.
The situation remains tense, and the government’s response indicates a determination to restore order and potentially resort to stringent laws like AFSPA if necessary to curb the violence.
