Agartala: Violence damaged BJP’s pre-scheduled victory procession in Haripur area of Ampinagar under Gomati district of Tripura as clashes broke out between BJP and TIPRA Motha workers during the procession.
BJP supporters alleged that they were hit by an unprovoked attack by TIPRA supporters.
Notably, TIPRA Motha’s candidate Pathan Lal Jamatia won from Ampinagar in the recently concluded elections.
To bring the situation under control, the police resorted to unprovoked firing to restore peace as tension escalated.
Speaking on the matter, Gomati District SP Ajit Pratap Singh told that five persons have been detained for questioning.
Clashes broke out between two groups in Ampinagar. Five people were slightly injured due to the scuffle. A specific case is being registered against the miscreants under relevant provisions of the IPC,” Singh said.
According to local leaders, security personnel resorted to lathi-charge to disperse the crowd, injuring several party workers on both sides.
TIPRA leaders alleged that the police had deliberately ordered a lathi-charge on TIPRA Motha activists, thus giving safe passage to BJP workers.
Tear gas shells were also used to restore peace at the incident sites.
The clash came after TIPRA Motha finally joined the negotiating table with the central government on a constitutional solution for the indigenous people of Tripura.
