Imphal: Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, who is heading a Supreme Court bench hearing a batch of petitions related to violence in Manipur, said what happened in the state of Manipur was It cannot be justified by saying that it happens elsewhere in the country.
The CJI’s statement came as an interventionist requested the Supreme Court to take notice of crimes against women in West Bengal.
To this, the CJI replied: “Undoubtedly, there are crimes against women across the country—that is our social reality. But here, we are dealing with something that is unprecedented, namely, crimes. and perpetration of violence against them.Women in communal and communal conflict situations.
There is no benefit in the fact that crimes against women are happening in all parts. There is only one answer.
You cannot excuse what is happening in one part of the country like Manipur on the basis that similar crimes are happening in other parts. The question is how do we deal with Manipur? Mention it”.
“Are you saying protect all daughters of India or protect none?”, the CJI asked the lawyer.
The Supreme Court termed the July 31 video of the nude parade of two women in Manipur as “appalling” and sought information on the action taken so far in the FIR filed, saying it would no longer want to The state police should investigate the matter as they practically handed over the women to the rioting mob.
The Supreme Court said it may constitute an SIT or a committee of former judges to hear the law officers representing the Center and Manipur on August 1, 2023.
The bench, which listed the Manipur violence petitions, said that although the incident of stripping and parading the women came to light on May 4, the Manipur police took 14 days to register the FIR on May 18. Took the time of day.
