New Delhi: Chinese national arrested for running illegal call center in Kathmandu. Nepal Police on Monday raided two call centers run illegally by Chinese nationals in Kathmandu.
Police seized documents and laptops and arrested a Chinese national and 20 others during the operation, Nepal police officer Bharat Bohora said.
The Chinese national rented a house in Kathmandu to run the call centers.
Police have suspected that Chinese nationals may be involved in cybercrime and other illegal activities.
On Sunday, a police team conducted a similar raid in Butwal city near the India-Nepal border where Chinese and Indian nationals were caught running an illegal call centre.
120 people were arrested in Butwale.
On June 30, police raided a company run by a Chinese national in Pokhara.
According to reports, the police are interrogating three Chinese and 75 Nepali nationals working in the company.
Nepal Police arrested 122 Chinese nationals from across Kathmandu Valley on 23 December 2019.
The operation, the largest operation against any foreign national in Nepal’s history, is apparently ongoing and at least 800 more Chinese nationals are currently being watched.
Later, the Nepal government handed them over to the Chinese authorities.
After the arrests, a spokesman for China’s foreign ministry said the cases were related to cross-border cyber fraud activities and investigations were ongoing.
