Haminta Biswa: Center to sign peace accord with Assam Adivasi communities soon

Kokrajhar: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa on Tuesday said the Center is likely to sign a peace accord with militant outfits of the state’s Adivasi communities by September.

Addressing a press conference after the Cabinet meeting here, he said his government has found a gap of about 5 million beneficiaries after linking Aadhaar card with ration card across the state.
“The central government is likely to sign a peace accord with the militant groups of Assam’s adivasi communities within this month,” Sarma said.

Without elaborating, he said that the entire process is being done under the initiative of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

A senior official of the Assam Police Headquarters told PTI that the five militant groups are likely to sign the peace accord.
These groups are All Adivasi National Liberation Army, Assam Adivasi communities of Assam, Bursa Commando Force, Santhal Tiger Force and Adivasi People’s Army.

“These groups have been under ceasefire for several years after announcing the suspension of operations. Their operatives live in designated camps under police protection,” the official said.
The central government signed the Bodo Peace Accord with the militant group National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) in January 2020.

On the difference in the number of beneficiaries after Aadhaar card and ration card were linked, Sarma said, “We have found that around 5 million beneficiaries have not come (for the service). Some may have died and some moved to other places due to marriages, some were fake.”
