Cattle smuggler killed in Assam clash with police
Guwahati: A suspected cattle smuggler was killed in a shootout with police in Assam’s Dhubri district, officials said on Sunday.
Acting on a tip-off, police tried to stop a vehicle in the Sapatgram area on Saturday night, he said.
“The car was signaled to stop, but it sped away. Our team started chasing her,” said a police officer.
He said the occupants of the car opened fire on a police vehicle, which was retaliated in self-defense.
“There were three people in the car. One of them died on the way to the hospital, while the other is now undergoing treatment.”
The officer added that one of the accused managed to escape.
In another incident, a suspected robber was injured in a police firing in Doboka , Nagaon District, officials said.
He said the suspect was arrested on Saturday, after which he was taken away at night to recover a hidden weapon.
He pushed a constable and tried to flee. We had to fire to make sure he didn’t escape. He had injured his right leg, “said a police officer.
A total of 43 people have been killed and at least 107 injured in police operations since Chief Minister Himanta Biswa took office in May 2021.
