Imphal: The United Naga Council (UNC) has announced a 12-hour complete shutdown in all Naga areas of Manipur state from 6 am to 6 pm on Monday, July 17, in connection with the killing of a Naga woman in Imphal.
UNC said that further action will be initiated if our demands are not met within 48 hours.
In a statement made available to Newmai News Network, the UNC made various demands in relation to the killing of Maring Naga, Lucy Marem.
According to the UNC, the Naga body is shocked to learn of the cold-blooded murder of “Lucy Marem, daughter of Thoukhal Marem of Narum (Beaulahram) village, Pallel, Chandel district, on the evening of July 15, 2023, at Sawambang (Akharul Road). , Imphal East District allegedly by Arambai Tenggol of Meiteis”.
The UNC alleges that she was forcibly captured by the Meira Paibis (Women Torchbearers) and handed over to the aforementioned Arambai Tenggol, a notorious “private militia” known for its infamy during the ongoing conflict in Manipur.
“It is unthinkable for a women’s organization like Meira Paibis who claims to be a torch bearer of peace to participate in killings,” the Naga body added.
The UNC then said, it “condemned such barbaric acts on innocent Nagas despite knowing their identity as Nagas”.
It also said that since the beginning of the ill-fated conflict between the Meiteis and the Kukis, the Nagas had maintained that peace should prevail and had given “our strength to that end”.
Those vested interests who want to drag us into this conflict will not be spared and our measures of patience and coordination in the recent past should not be taken as a sign of weakness by all concerned who provoked us, destroyed our property. What, tortured and humiliated. We are at different places and times during the current conflict,” UNC also said.
The UNC then said it “takes a serious view” of the incident and called on the state government to immediately set up a judicial inquiry committee and arrest those responsible for the crime (including Meira Paibis who are involved in the crime), and should be punished exemplarily. Action started against the criminals.
The UNC also demanded that “the cold-blooded murder of Naga sister Lucy Maring should be brought to justice in accordance with Naga customary law”.
The UNC also demanded that Meitei civil society organizations be held equally responsible for this “despicable act” so that their role and position should be made known to all concerned.
The Naga body then said, “As a mark of our outrage over the brutal killing and as a tribute to the innocent victim Lucy Marem, a 12-hour complete shutdown be observed in all Naga areas of Manipur state from 6 am to 6 am.” Will.” Evening on Monday 17th July 2023.
If our demands are not met within 48 hours, further action will be initiated.
