Blast on All Manipur Students’ Union office condemned by NESO

Imphal: The North East Students’ Organisation (NESO), representing eight major student movements in the Northeastern states, strongly condemned the bomb blast that occurred on February 23, 2024, at around 9:30pm inside the office of the All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU) located at DM University Campus, Thangmeiband, Imphal.

The tragic incident resulted in the loss of a precious life, Mr. Oinam Kenejy, a student of DM College, and serious injury to another student, Mr. Salam Michael, also a student of DM College.

In an official statement, NESO officials expressed deep perturbation and serious concern over the unfolding events in the region. The statement highlighted the burning of the office of a prominent social organization like the United Committee Manipur (UCM), including the Macha Leima School, as well as the vandalising of other social organizations’ offices. Additionally, the residence of Mr. Sinam Prakash, the Advisor of NESO, was ransacked and vandalised.

The statement said All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU), as a premier Students’ Organization has maintained a non-political identity and condemned violence in any form. NESO emphasised the importance of the public guiding AMSU to ensure it remains committed to non-political activities and a non-violent method of movement during this critical juncture.

The organization further called for the continuation of ongoing peace processes and urged the government to initiate dialogues with all armed groups for a political solution that is acceptable to all, ensuring the protection and upliftment of the indigenous people of Manipur.

NESO comprises of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), Naga Students’ Federation (NSF), Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), Twipra Students’ Federation (TSF), All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU), Garo Students’ Union (GSU) and All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU).
