KOHIMA: Lotha Students Union observed a Black Day in memory of Lt. Thungkhomo Ezung and Lt. Chumdamo Tungoe on April 14 at LSU Martyr’s Park in Wokha Town. Both these men laid down their lives on April 14, 1977 during a peaceful protest in Wokha town.
On April 14, 1977, during a silent protest organized by the Lotha Students’ Union (LSU) in Wokha, Lt. Thungkhomo Ezung and Lt. Chumdamo Tungoe were shot dead by the Nagaland Police. The protest was held in response to the brutal treatment of Ngurkhuma Mizo, then SDO (Civil). Mizo was beaten up by the Assam Police and Assam Forest Guard while trying to protect legal rights over a land dispute in Ralan area under Wokha district.
Institutions under the jurisdiction of Lotha Students’ Union also observed Black Day by offering silent prayers and wearing black ribbon badges during their morning assemblies. He gave the students a brief history of the event, as it is important to LSU and the Lotha community as a whole.
During the ceremony, a minute’s silence was observed, and Lotha Students’ Union President, Lirhonthung E Kithan, gave a short speech in honor of the two martyrs. LSU officials visited the burial site of Lt. Thungkhomo Ezung and Lt. Chumdamo Tungoe to pay their respects and the student body also met the families of the martyrs.
