Shillong: Criticizing the regional parties in Meghalaya, BJP spokesperson and candidate from North Shillong Mariahom Kharkrang on Thursday said that the regional parties are using other communities for their political interest.
According to Kharkrang , these parties have their own constitution and agenda.
“For them, it’s just indigenous people. Sometimes I wonder, how do they realize they can ask for votes from other communities when their constitution itself says they’re only for indigenous people,” ‘ said Kharkrang .
Stating that what they are doing is contradictory, Kharkrang said that during elections they seek votes from non-tribals but their constitution does not allow a non-tribal to be a member of the organization.
“So it seems that all communities other than the Khasi are being used for their own political gain,” a BJP spokesperson said.
Kharkrang will contest the 2023 general election against incumbent MLAs Adelbert Nongrum (VPP), Dr Aman Warr (UDP), Ransom Sutnga (NPP), and Elgiva Rynjah.
On another note, Kharkrang is demanding an explanation from the government on the costs of COVID-19. He believes that the public has a right to know the amount spent and questioned why the expenditure in Meghalaya was higher than in states like Manipur and Assam.
Kharkrang also claimed that the government spent less on infrastructure and more on consumables like PPE kits.
