Shillong: BJP national general secretary Rituraj Sinha on Sunday alleged that the district administration had failed to allow PM Narendra Modi’s election rally to be held on February 24 at PA Stadium in Tura in West Garo Hills district. has refused, claiming that the stadium is not ready.
Addressing a press conference at the BJP office in Shillong, Sinha said, “All efforts are being made to stem the tide of BJP in Meghalaya. Local parties as well as other national parties, be it Congress, Be it NPP or TMC, all are completely surprised by the ‘Modi wave’ in Meghalaya. They are also surprised by the rise of saffron in the state.
Sinha said Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s rally in Garo Hills saw a huge response as more than 10,000 people participated in the election rally.
“We applied for permission to hold PM Modi’s rally in Tura and have received a letter,” Sinha said. But the authorities concerned have now refused permission to hold a rally at the PA Sangma Stadium saying that the construction is not yet complete.
“My question is, if the stadium is not full for the PM’s rally, how did Chief Minister Conrad Sangma use the stadium for the grand opening in December?” Sinha asked.
“Is this reason legitimate? Since the people of Meghalaya are supporting PM Modi, they are trying their best to stem the tide of the BJP,” Sinha added.
He also criticized the Chief Minister for trying to take credit by showing that the stadium was built only by his party.
Sinha said that the stadium was built at a cost of Rs 127 crore, of which 90 percent of the funds were received from the central government.
“People are supporting the BJP and they want an end to corruption and family politics,” he added.
About the assets of candidates like Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh, James Sangma and Dr Mukul Sangma, he said, “How can politicians from such a small state have such huge assets with a per capita income of Rs 50,000?”
According to the affidavit of the candidates, Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh has property worth Rs 128 crore.
Asked whether the prime minister would still hold rallies in Meghalaya, Sinha said no power in the world could stop Modi from holding rallies in Shillong and Tura.
