Biren-led Manipur government failed to sustained KPA support
Imphal: The Kuki People’s Alliance (KPA) has withdrawn support from the Biren Singh-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Manipur.
In a letter to Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey, titled “Withdrawal of Support to Manipur’s N Brain Singh Government”, KPA president Tongmang Haokip said: “After considering the current unrest, Continued support is no longer fruitful for the present Manipur government led by Chief Minister N Biren Singh.
“Accordingly, the KPA’s support to the Government of Manipur is hereby withdrawn and may be declared null and void.”
The KPA was formed by Tongmang Haokip, a former IFS officer, and Wilson L Hangshing on January 12, 2022. The party won two seats in the 2022 Manipur Legislative Assembly election and extended support to the BJP in Manipur and became an ally of the BJP in its government.
However, following the May 3 clash between the Meiteis and Kukis, two Kuki MLAs became part of the 10 Kuki MLAs who demanded separate administration from the state.
During an interview with journalist, Karan Thapar of The Wire, KPA General Secretary Wilson L. Hangshing also said that it would be impossible for the Kukis to live with the Meiteis in the same state.
Meanwhile, the KPA had earlier appealed to the Nagas of Manipur to support them in their efforts towards a separate administration.
A release issued by the KPA President on August 3, 2023 said, “Kuki is mindful of the love and support extended by the silent majority of our Naga brothers in this hour of shock and suffering.
“The time has come for unity of purpose and action and the door is always open for our brother Nagas of Manipur to join us in our efforts to break away from the Meitei subjugation. We will begin this with a unity march on May 3. It is our constant appeal to join hands in solving this matter.
“We believe that we can shape our future together with mutual respect, mutual trust, sincerity and integrity.”
