Bangladeshi students demand actions against Meitei student death
Imphal: Medical students, mostly from Manipur’s Meitei community, gathered on the premises of Prime Medical College in Rampur, Bangladesh on Thursday night.
They held a candlelight protest over the killing of two teenage Meitei students – Phijam Hemanjit (20) and Hijam Linthoingambi alias Luwanganbi (17) – by armed Kuki miscreants amid the ongoing communal violence in Manipur.
Supriya Bhattarai, a student leader, said the authorities should hand over the bodies of the two students to their families as soon as possible. The two students went missing on July 6 after going on a motorcycle in Manipur’s Churachandpur district. They was presumed dead after his photos surfaced on social media on September 25.
Bhattarai also said that the students of his college could feel the pain of the deceased’s family. “We strongly condemn the killing of innocent students by Kuki militants.”
Placards and festoons were displayed in the protest. It read, “We are demanding speedy justice for the murder of two students.”
The student leader further said that the culprits should be arrested soon and punished according to the law of the Indian government.
There are about 15,000 Metis in four different districts of Bangladesh, namely Sylhet District, Moulvibazar District, Sunamganj District, and Habiganj District.
