In clashes-hit Manipur ban on internet extended till October 31
Imphal: The Manipur government has further extended the suspension of internet services in the violence-hit state.
The latest extension on suspension of Internet services in Manipur will continue for another five days.
According to a notification issued by the Manipur government, the internet ban in the violence-hit northeastern state will continue till June 25.
It was on May 3, when the Manipur government first suspended Internet services, including broadband, in Manipur.
It may be noted that the state of Manipur has been on the boil since May 3 following clashes between two communities and subsequent large-scale violence.
More than 100 people have lost their lives and thousands have been displaced as a result of the clashes and subsequent violence in the state.
Earlier, the Manipur High Court had directed the Biren Singh-led BJP government in the state to partially restore internet service in the violence-hit state.
The Manipur High Court directed the state government to provide limited internet services to the citizens of the state at certain places.
The directive was given by Manipur High Court Justices Ahanthem Bimol Singh and A Guneswar Sharma while hearing a batch of Public Interest litigations (PILs).
PILs were filed in the Manipur High Court for restoration of internet services in the state.
“Considering the difficulties faced by the public, particularly in connection with the ongoing process of admission of students in the State and to enable the public to render their immediate and necessary services, the State authorities are directed to Provide limited internet service to the public at certain designated places under the control of state authorities,” the Manipur High Court order said.
