Ban Chinese CCTVs in India Congress MLA Ninong Ering urges PM

Itanagar: Congress legislator from Arunachal Pradesh Ninong Ering has requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ban Chinese CCTVs being used in the country keeping in view the threat perception.

Pasighat West MLA Ering, in a message to Modi on Sunday, advised Modi to launch a public awareness campaign to create awareness among people against the use of Chinese CCTV in their homes.
Ering, a former Union minister himself, said the government could consider launching a Swadeshi cloud-based server solution to store CCTV data wherever needed.

“Given India’s prowess in the IT sector, we are well-positioned to address this threat to our national security,” he said in his letter.
Ering quoted an article as saying that Chinese-made CCTVs currently in use across the country could be used as “eyes and ears” by Beijing and pose a serious threat to India’s national security. It happens because existing laws and awareness are inadequate to deal with the threat, Ehring said in an article. What appeared in the media.
Emphasizing his point, Ering said that Chinese hackers have regularly attacked Indian institutions. CTV networks are used in digital video recording over the Internet. (DVR) devices were compromised in operation by Chinese hackers.
Center estimates show that there are more than two million CCTVs installed across India, more than 90 percent of which are made by companies that are partly owned by the Chinese government. What makes the situation alarming is that more than half of these CCTVs are installed in government departments, he claimed.
“Former Minister of State for Communications and IT, Sanjay Dhotre, raised the issue of CCTVs in the Lok Sabha as vulnerabilities that could transmit sensitive data to servers located abroad,” Ering said in his letter. said in his letter.
Experts have also repeatedly pointed out that these CCTVs have a weak technical architecture that can be easily compromised and used for offensive purposes. These CCTVs can effectively become eyes and ears for anti-India forces. Chinese CCTV systems made by Hikvision and Prama Hikvision have also found their way to India’s Southern Naval Command in Kochi, he claimed.
He asserted that several countries, including the US, UK and Australia, have identified the risks associated with the use of Chinese infrastructure in CCTV systems and have made clear public statements in areas sensitive to national security. Their use has been banned.
