Nagaland: After growing dissension within the Myanmar-based faction of the NSCN-K Yung Aung, the splinter group has split and elected Major General (retd) Aung from Tangshang region as the chairman of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN).
According to a press statement issued by the armed extremist group, an emergency meeting was convened at GHQ on June 27 following widespread internal strife and Aung Mai was unanimously elected as the faction’s new president.
Due to mismanagement in the government, the Naga Army under the leadership of Major General Langnyei had sent a meeting information letter to all Naga Army unit commanders to arrive at GHQ on April 5, 2023, the press statement said.
On 10 April 2023, the Naga Army meeting continued and removed Yung Aung from the party presidency for his “anti-national and anti-party activities which are totally against the ethos of the NSCN/GPRN”.
It maintained that from 10 April 2023, the NSCN/GPRC government was run by the Naga Army until 27 June 2023 when a new chairman was elected.
According to the press statement, 50-year-old Major General (retd) Aung Mai is the personal secretary of late SS Khaplang who served in various capacities and held other portfolios including Home Minister in addition to military assignments.
