Aizawl: A 12-year-old boy and a 1-month-old baby, two of the many internally displaced people from Manipur who were taking shelter in a village in north Mizoram’s Kolasib district, died of illness on Monday. Gone, an official said.

Last month, a woman who had sought refuge in Vairengte village in Kolasib district, near the Assam border, also died of stomach pain. His body was sent to his native village in Manipur.
Meanwhile, Saiphai village council vice-president Lalthlirlien Hmar, who is also a member of the village-level relief committee, said the 12-year-old boy, identified as Lalthlirlien, had been complaining of illness for the past few days and was being treated. According to sources, the newborn was born at the sub-health center soon after her mother fled to Saiphai village from Manipur during the riots and has been living there ever since.
Following the deaths, the district administration has been directed to conduct a general health check at the village relief camp where a total of 136 people, mostly women, children and senior citizens, are taking shelter in Saiphai village following ethnic violence.
According to sources, the village relief committee was providing food to the displaced people with the help of donations from NGOs, churches and villagers, but recently news of a food crisis has surfaced and the state government has yet to provide aid not provided.
Earlier, state Home Commissioner and Secretary H Lalengmawia had said that they have sought financial assistance of Rs 5 crore from the Center as an immediate relief to the homeless. He had said that the State Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Department would also sanction the relief money.
According to the state home department, a total of 8,878 people from Manipur have fled to Mizoram and taken shelter in 10 districts of the state.

While the majority of displaced people live in makeshift relief camps, others have been sheltered by their relatives.
