Agartala: Tripura’s sports pride, 20-year-old Asmita Dey has once again lifted the state’s sports field as she won the gold medal at the prestigious Junior Asia Cup Judo Championship held in Macau, China on July 23.
Asmita Dey showed exceptional skill from the start, dominating Group D in the opening round with a stunning victory over Hong Kong’s Sweet Yeo Tang.
Her impressive performance earned him a bye into the main opening round, and set the stage for more victories.
In a thrilling semi-final, the talented Indian judoka, who earlier won a silver medal at the Asian Open 2023 in Kuwait City and a bronze medal at the Asian Junior Championships 2022, showed her determination and skill by defeating Australia’s Ashlyn Do.
Asmita carried her winning streak into the final showdown, where she edged out another Australian, Anneliese Fielder, to win the gold medal in the 48 kg category.
Adding to India’s glory, Unnati Sharma (63kg) and Arun Kumar (73kg) also stood atop the podium, winning gold medals in their respective categories.
The Indian contingent performed brilliantly throughout the championship, culminating in an impressive tally of three gold, one silver, and one bronze medal at the Junior Asia Cup Judo Championships.
