Imphal: A consignment of dried poppy seeds sent by India Post parcel from Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) was intercepted by Narcotics Affairs and Border Police (NAP) and Manipur Police officials at the Imphal Head Post Office on Monday. stopped.
A total of 860 grams of dry poppy seeds were sent from Bandipora or Bandipur district of Jammu and Kashmir to a special person of 19 Assam Rifles posted in Noney district of Manipur.
It was sent by one Arif Hussain Mir through India Post Imphal Head Office. The illegal items were packed in plastic in parcels weighing around 10 kg.
Acting on a tip-off, a team of NAP Officer-in-Charge Sapam Ibomcha and Imphal West District Police Officer-in-Charge N Ingocha directed officials at Post Office, Imphal to open the parcel in the presence of Head. Post Office Imphal, U Radheshyam, and Sub Divisional Collector Imphal Headquarters.
On opening the parcel, dry poppy weighing 860 grams was recovered along with other items.
Ingocha later told the media that a case under the NDPS Act, 1985 has been registered and efforts are on to arrest the accused involved in the dubious deals.
The head post officer said the law enforcement agency intercepted the deal before accepting the consignment for postage.
Along with the consignment details is the consignment number. Consignment number is unique and allocated to each parcel.
“We can track the status or location of the consignment online through the consignment number,” he added.
The seizure of these illegal items comes at a time when the Manipur government is launching a crackdown on poppy cultivation and cultivation across the state.
