At age of 88 eminent singer and lyricist Birendra Nath passes away

Guwahati: Eminent Assamese educationist, linguist, singer and lyricist Birendra Nath Datta breathed his last on October 23 at Dispur Hospital in Guwahati. He was 88 years old at the time of his death.
The donor was suffering from prolonged illness. However, the exact cause of his death has not been revealed yet.
Birendra Nath Datta was born on March 1, 1935 in Nagaon, Assam. A noted writer, who wrote several scholarly books on folklore, culture and literature, he began his academic career in 1957 as a lecturer at B. Borooah College.
Later he served as Principal of Pramathesh Barua College, Goalpara College and Pandu College in Gauripur.
He obtained his PhD in Folklore from Guwahati University in 1974.

He retired from Guwahati University in 1995.
However, on request he joined Tezpur University as a professor in the Department of Traditional Culture and Art Forms.
In addition, he was awarded the 12th Jagaddhatri-Harmohan Das Literary Award for his work “Sankar Madhavar Manisha Aru Asomar Sanaskritic Uttaradhikar”.
Apart from his academic skills, Datta was a talented singer and songwriter. He also wrote many famous Assamese songs.
