At 75 Ex- cabinet minister Tongbram Mangibabu passes away

Imphal: Former Manipur Cabinet Minister Tongbram Mangibabu, passed away on Wednesday at Shija Hospital in Imphal West district after prolonged illness.

He was 75 years old and is survived by his wife, 3 daughters and 2 sons.

He was imprisoned twice in Imphal Jail in 1968 and 1969 in connection with the state demand movement launched by the erstwhile Socialist Party.
Manipur got statehood in 1972 under the Indian Union. For the first time, he was elected to the 6th Manipur Legislative Assembly from Thanga assembly constituency in 1965 on a Janata Dal ticket.
He became the Cabinet Minister for Cooperation and Arts and Culture in 1997.
In 2007, he was re-elected to the 9th Manipur Legislative Assembly on an Indian National Congress (INC) ticket from the same constituency and became the Government Chief Whip and in 2012, he was re-elected to the 10th Manipur Legislative Assembly on an INC ticket.
