The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Wednesday announced that Nagaland and Meghalaya will hold state assembly elections on February 27, while Tripura will hold elections on February 16.
While the term of the Nagaland assembly ends on March 12, the term of the Meghalaya and Tripura assemblies ends on March 15 and March 22 respectively.
Addressing a press conference, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar said that the date for issuing gazette notification for Nagaland and Meghalaya will be January 31, while for Tripura it will be January 21.
The last date for filing nomination papers in Nagaland and Meghalaya is February 7, while for Tripura it will be January 30.
The three state assemblies have 60 members each.
The last date for withdrawal of candidates is February 10 for Nagaland and Meghalaya and February 2 for Tripura. Counting of votes will take place on March 2.
Kumar also informed that the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) will be implemented in the state. He further said that the election schedule has been made keeping in mind the examination schedule of the students appearing for the board examination.
While Tripura is ruled by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) is in power in Nagaland. The National People’s Party (NPP), the only political party in the Northeast with national party recognition, governs Meghalaya.
The CEC said that the participation of women in Nagaland was higher than that of men in the last elections. The state has 60 assembly constituencies-59 ST and one general category.
A total of 28,14,478 voters are eligible to exercise their adult franchise in the upcoming elections. Among them there are 14 lakh 14 thousand 576 male and 13 lakh 98 thousand 825 female voters. The total number of voters belonging to the third gender was 77.
Among other important points, the total number of centenarian voters stood at 679, the number of voters who fall in the age group of 80+ years is 38,039 while 17,297 voters belong to the disabled category.
