Imphal: Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) women’s wing has strongly condemned the alleged assault of the president of Kangleipak Students’ Association (KSA) by state police.
Assistant coordinator of the women’s wing COCOMI, RK Tharaksana told media at its Lamphelpat, Imphal West office on Saturday that on September 27, thousands of students demonstrated a protest demanding for justice of the two students namely Hijam Linthoingambi and Phijam Hemanjit who were reportedly killed by Kuki militants.
On the night of the very day KSA president Sukham Bidyananda was returning to his residence at Khongman. When he reached Loklaobung a police team stopped him and enquired from where he was returning.
Bidyananda told the police team that he was returning after attending a meeting of the 6 students’ body in connection with the present crisis and killing of two students by Kuki militants, she added.
Though Bidyananda disclosed his identity as president of KSA by producing his identity card, curfew pass he was physically assaulted and even threatened by pointing their guns, she alleged.
In connection with the incident Bidyananda himself lodged a FIR at Imphal Police Station. She appealed the authority concerned to take necessary legal action against the police team.
Beside, assistant coordinator of the same women’s wing, Wahengbam Luwangleima said the government should destroy all the poppy cultivation that has been continuing in some parts of the hilly areas of Manipur. The root cause of the present crisis is illegal poppy cultivation and all the poppy cultivation must be destroyed immediately.
