GUWAHATI: Nearly two-and-a-half months after a distributor of a dairy cooperative was shot dead here, the Guwahati police on Sunday said they have cracked the case by arresting five members of a gang who allegedly But what was the crime?
Two of them allegedly shot dead Ranjit Bora on November 21 when he was on his way to a bank to collect money, Guwahati Police Commissioner Diganta Barah said.
Bora was shot in the neck in Panjabari area of the city.
Two main accused were arrested from Guwahati and Nalbari. During interrogation, he confessed to committing the crime with a 9 mm pistol,” he said at a press meet.
The Police Commissioner said that three of his accomplices have also been arrested, while the sixth member is absconding.
He further said that there was no other motive in the killing of Ranjit Bora except to grab money.
The police had earlier announced a reward of Rs 2 lakh for any information about the businessman’s murder.
Hours after the murder, Guwahati police and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who also holds the home portfolio, both claimed that “some clues” had been gathered and the culprits would be arrested soon.
The deceased was a distributor of West Assam Milk Producers Cooperative Union Limited (Purabi Dairy).
Condemning the incident, opposition parties alleged that the killing exposed the deteriorating law and order situation in the state under the BJP-led government.
