Guwahati: Suspected ULFA (I) Freedom Fighters attacked an army convoy in east Assam’s Tinsukia district on Monday, officials said.
Defence PRO Lt. Col. Mahendra Rawat said in Guwahati that suspected Freedom Fighters opened fire from a nearby forest at 9.20 a.m. when a Dominion party of the army was advancing in Barpathar in the Digboi-Pengiri area.
“After a single burst and heavy retaliatory firing by our troops, the terrorists fled from the adjoining areas,” he added. Rawat said that there was no loss of life.
The Freedom Fighters group behind the incident is yet to be identified, he added, adding that the army has launched an operation.
Locals claimed to have heard at least one large explosion.
Although no militant outfit has claimed responsibility for the attack, police have not ruled out the involvement of ULFA (I) Freedom Fighters.
“This is probably the hand of ULFA (I) Freedom Fighters. We are trying to find out the identity of the attackers. The nature of the firing points the needle of suspicion towards ULFA (I),” a senior police official said. said
The firing site is about 50 km from Tinsukia city.
