Assam: ULFA-I claims no cadres are sheltering in Pengree.

Guwahati: Following the encounter between ULFA-I and security forces in Tinsukia’s Pengeree, the banned outfit claimed in a statement that none of their operatives were in the area when the incident took place.

On Wednesday morning, a man, identified by the police as a linkman, was reportedly injured in an encounter between security forces and suspected ULFA-I.

The injured person has been identified as Amit Mukhiya.

The incident took place around 4.50 am when security forces entered the forest area to nab ULFA-I activists.

Tinsukia SP Abhijit Gaurav Dilip said, “We went to the Pengree forest area to nab the militants hiding in the area. They opened fire on the police team and the security forces fired back at them.” A linkman of ULFA-I, who accompanied the police team to the spot, was injured during the firing.

He was shot in the leg but is now out of danger.
However, ULFA-I, in a statement sent to media houses, said that no cadre of the organization was present in the area.

A statement sent by SS Captain Rumel Assam alleged that the police and security forces were trying to hide the facts about the incident. However, ULFA-I also did not clarify whether the youths injured in the firing were related to them.

The investigation by the police is still going on.
