GUWAHATI: The United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA-I) has asked people to skip Republic Day and has requested an 18-hour shutdown on January 26 in Assam. They have requested a complete shutdown on Thursday from 12:01 pm to 6 pm. The Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN-K) has also called for a general strike in Nagaland on the scheduled date. It should be noted that Saraswati Puja will also be held on January 26 in the state.
ULFA-I supported the boycott and called for a Bandh in Assam last Independence Day on August 15. In a formal statement, the group critical of R-Day celebrations pleaded with everyone to skip the event. Essential services such as relief activities, medical care, electricity, water supply, fire services and press will continue to be provided without any disruption, the statement said.
Notably, an alliance of six militant groups known as the powerful and outlawed Coordination Committee (CorCom) staged a half-day on January 25 to protest the boycott of the Republic Day celebrations on January 26. Demanded 18-hour shutdown in Manipur from night.
According to a statement by the CorCom Press Committee, the total shutdown will begin at midnight on January 25 and end at 6 pm on January 26. The Corps is fighting for the restoration of Manipur’s autonomy and now has six illegal organizations: KCP, KYKL, PREPAK, PREPAK (Pro), RPF, and UNLF.
However, the announcement states that the stop does not apply to events, water supplies, health care, or emergency services.
The statement argued that residents of Manipur should not participate in R-Day celebrations as they have no reason to celebrate India becoming a full-fledged state. He cited historical evidence that ‘Manipur/Kangleipak’ was an independent nation that regained independence from the colonial British a day before India but did not join India.
