Guwahati: Assam: Two minor sisters drowned in village pond in Golaghat. Pandemonium erupted in Kavaru village of Jonakinagar in Assam’s Golaghat district on Thursday night after two minor sisters drowned in the village pond

The sisters, 11-year-old Bulbuli Das and 16-year-old Pallavi Das, had gone to wash their hands and feet in the pond when they slipped into the deep water.
In an attempt to save the girls from drowning, their brother-in-law Jannati Saikia was also seriously injured. Though the three were rushed to Swahid Kushal Kanwar Civil Hospital in Golaghat, doctors declared both the girls brought dead, while the injured brother-in-law is fighting for his life.

The relatives of the victims alleged that another woman of the same family had drowned in the pond about a month ago. Although the villagers asked the owner of the pond to put a fence around it, he did not always listen.
“This pond was dug by Meena Saikia. The villagers asked him several times to put a fence around it but he never heeded their pleas. Another member of our family drowned in the pond only a month ago. was gone,” said one of the victim’s relatives.

The elder sister of the deceased said that our aunt had drowned in the pond earlier and today both my sisters drowned in the same pond while my brother-in-law is fighting for his life in the hospital. We kept requesting Mena Saikia to put a fence around such a deep pool but he never listened to us. The killer pond has claimed the lives of three members of the same family while the condition of one is critical. We strongly demand that the culprit be punished.”
