Guwahati: The India Meteorological Department on Sunday said widespread heavy rains are likely in Assam in the next five days.
In a ‘Special Weather Bulletin’, IMD’s Regional Meteorological Center (RMC) in Guwahati has issued a ‘Yellow Alert’ for Sunday and Monday, followed by an ‘Orange Alert’ from Tuesday to Thursday.
A ‘yellow alert’ means watch and update, while an ‘orange alert’ means to be ready for action.
Increased humidity is likely during the next five days due to strong low-level southerly/southwesterly winds from Bay of Bengal to Northeast India.
“Under its influence, heavy to very heavy rain/thundershower activity is very likely over Assam during the next five days,” the RMC said in a bulletin.
It added that this weather condition is also likely to prevail in other northeastern states like Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram.
It added that there is a possibility of temporary traffic disruption due to inundation of roads, uprooting of trees and breaking of tree branches. Uprooting of trees can damage the power sector.
“Heavy rainfall may damage standing crops and vegetables at maturity stage. Lightning may injure people and livestock in open areas,” the report said, adding that floods and landslides are also likely at several places.
