Assam: Tensions rise after attack on Hindu family in Karimganj

Silchar: Maizgram in Assam’s Karimganj district has been gripped by sectarian tensions for the past few days, following an April 23 attack on a family by a group of people allegedly belonging to another community.

Maizgram falls under the Karimganj North Assembly constituency, about 62 km from the town of Silchar .

Bhanu Rudra Paul wife Rudra Pal said in her police complaint that on April 23, around one o’clock in the afternoon, an Alto car with four riders hit her cow in Maizgram. This was followed by a heated exchange of words between her husband and the occupants of the car. He said in his complaint that a local resident then intervened and the matter was settled.

Her objection further expresses that at around 2 pm around the same time, four people broke into her home and went after her relatives including her better half, child, little girl and brother by marriage with sharp weapons and iron bars. Also, went after with bamboo sticks. He informed police that regarding 15-16 others additionally joined the four blamed.

The complaint further stated, “The assailants insulted our 12-year-old daughter. Hearing our screams, the neighbors started gathering and the thugs fled. All the family members were seriously injured in the attack.”

The family lodged an FIR against four persons identified as Abdul Hanan, Enam Uddin , Salahuddin and Noorul Ahmad at Karimganj Saddar Police Station on the same day. All of them belong to Pathu area of Karimganj.

Sources said that both the partner and her husband are currently undergoing treatment at the hospital.
