SILCHAR: Assam Police have recently launched an investigation into the alleged attack on a student of the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Silchar by its seniors on the premises of the institute. The student, who is currently enrolled in the Department of Electrical Engineering, NIT Silchar , hails from Patharkandi in Karimganj district. According to the complainant, on the night of April 28, nine senior students beat him and destroyed his mobile phone and laptop. After he sounded the alarm, his roommates came and rescued him from the elders. The complainant said that he was then taken in an ambulance to Silchar Medical College and Hospital and underwent medical tests.
The complainant said that he was scared at first and he also thought that the NIT authorities would take some action. The student said he decided to seek police help a week after the incident because he thought his silence would encourage the accused to do the same without any fear.
He also claimed to have made threatening calls and made financial offers to resolve the issue without the involvement of the police.
He said he had spoken to institute officials, including director Shivaji Bandupadhyay, who had assured him of stern action against the attackers, but nothing had been done.
V Singh, a senior official at the local police station, said on Tuesday that he had registered a case and had consulted NIT Silchar officials on the matter, who had assured him of full cooperation in the investigation.
