Doomdoma: A pan-India survey on higher education has revealed that Assam is below the national standard in many educational parameters.
According to the survey, the state has only sixteen colleges for every one lakh students, while the national average is thirty-one colleges per lakh students.
Additionally, the number of universities in the state is less than many other states in the country.
The survey conducted in 2020-21 by the Ministry of Education and recently released provides the status of higher education in Indian states and shows that Assam is low in several important parameters, such as student-teacher ratio and Infrastructure.
According to the report, there are 600 colleges in the state, including 108 private institutions and 28 universities. This number of universities is considered insufficient compared to the number of students in the state.
The report states that the limited number of colleges in Assam is depriving students of opportunities for higher education.
The report took into account various parameters including teachers, student enrolment, programmes, examination results, education finances, infrastructure, student-teacher ratio, density of institutions, and gender parity index.
According to state education department sources, Assam ranks higher than some states and lower than others in the survey. The ranking is attributed to several factors.
“As of 2020-21, we have 20 universities, including private and deemed institutions. These include four government colleges, 321 provincial colleges, 92 non-government colleges, 11 government model colleges, one government law college, and 26 non-government colleges. including law colleges. The government is providing adequate funding for infrastructure development of these institutions and setting up of new universities and colleges as well as adding new programs to existing colleges to increase access to higher education,” said an official.
According to sources, many colleges in the state lack proper learning environment and teachers are not committed to their work. All kinds of student movements also affect the academic environment in colleges.
